Deepika Padukone new photos Updated
Bollywood sensation Deepika Padukone lead the India Day parade as grand Marshal, as over 50,000 people, mostly Indian-Americans, cheered the over two dozen floats, richly decorated with patriotic themes as part of the independence day celebration here.
The parade showcasing Indian cultural heritage and fast expanding economy also fascinated dozens of tourists from several nations visiting the United States.
Deepika Padukone, who stormed Bollywood with her debut film Om Shanti Om last year, was the grand Marshal of the parade, while industrialist Vijay Mallya was the chief guest.

Deepika Padukone and her ex Upen Patel were in the USA recently. While Deepika was in New York representing India as the Grand Marshall at the I-Day Parade, Upen did the same in Los Angeles. He also celebrated his birthday on the same day (August 16).
Says Upen, "It was thrilling. I was completely speechless when I was called on the dais. It was my first time in LA and it was great to see the overwhelming response."
He adds, "I was leading the parade with patriotic Indian numbers playing. It was indeed a double celebration for me, having led the parade on I-Day and celebrating my birthday."
Upen, who will be seen in Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani had no time to explore LA. "I was there only for the parade. I would love to go sometime again."
'It was a huge honour'
Talking about her New York experience, Deepika says, "I was told that in the last 28 years, this is the first time that they had this kind of a huge turnout. I had to walk 20 blocks and then we were on a stage for three hours while 50 floats passed by. Later, there was a cultural programme at a park. I too sang and did a little jig on the Om Shanti Om title track."
Deepika went Indian while attending the events. She says, "The first day, I draped a red-and-pink Manish Malhotra chiffon saree; at the parade, I wore a maroon-and-gold Tarun Tahiliani bridal ghaghra choli while at the closing dinner, I was in a black-and-gold Shantanu-Nikhil ghaghra choli. I wore Farah Ali Khan's jewellery."
Deepika adds that for her it was a huge responsibility to represent India. "I have heard that Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, my dad (Prakash Padukone) and Raj Kapoor were some of the people who attended as Grand Marshall, so it was a huge honour for me."
